Road kill, the new Fashion accessory?!

November 23, 2010

It was recently reported that Ke$ha, the 'Tik Tok' singer has declared "I think it’s cool to wear road kill."

"A friend of mine has a big farm in the desert, and she picks up feathers and roadkill for me, then makes it into clothes.

She added: "If I died and somebody wanted to wear my teeth around their neck to (the MTV) VMAs, I’d feel honoured."

Redi Peppard, an ex student of fine arts at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, seems to be the leading designer of this new fashion fix. Pappard is surprisingly a vegetarian, stating that she uses 99% road kill, and 'that leaving these creatures to decompose in the streets/bin is a waste'.

Peppard explains she uses the art of taxidermy to preserve the animals, and that everything is completely clean and safe:

“The tanning process (turning the skin into something like a leather) sterilizes the animals entirely,” Peppard said. “However before I even start the taxidermy process all the animals are frozen. Most of the little critters and nastys that feed on the dead bodies will die off anyways when frozen.”

“The process of taxidermy is a long one,” Peppard said. “It requires much care, precision and attention. Without a doubt, the creatures that I use would be left to rot in the gutters if I didn’t pick them up.”

Lady Gaga is also a fan, in her Bad Romance video you can briefly see a rat headpiece if you pause at the 4:27 mark:

An interview with the designer herself may help to explain things:

  2. I understand that wearing these types of accessories are unique and making a statement; but isn't this dating back to the legends of when people used to wear souvenirs of their kills to show how great a hunter they were? We are meant to be going forward with fashion right...not backwards
