Winol Week 1, Critical Review Notes

February 14, 2011

All in all I think last week was a success. I have given my feedback and de-briefs through the week, so these blogs will be mainly for myself so I can track what I have done week to week for my critical review.

Monday:

I asked my Managing Editor Karen to get everyone’s contact details (and job roles) and to put them on the Editors board.

The decision was also made that members of the Winol team will be attending as many community events and launches. This will give us a better audience relationship and will make getting interviews for the news team much easier. -Because we will be doing this we are also getting business cards printed.

We also had a big push on advertising using twitter, Facebook and putting up posters over the University. Winol really want more reader response this semester, which we received through re-tweets and the public approaching our team to ask questions.

I also created a new time table which included pushing forward the team meetings on a Monday to allow the teams to work throughout the day. Mondays and Wednesdays now have a tighter structure which should help with deadlines and the production process.

Tuesday

Tuesday was spent arranging features for the next few weeks. Me and the features Editor concluded that we would have a weekly what's on program, music review, film review, week in history, competition and a main feature. We both decided that features would focus more on articles this semester, what are quicker to turn out. This way the website is updated throughout the week, which will keep audience figures up, and will create a broader content. We will a have weekly video feature (what's on) and various other video features throughout the semester.

I also had a meeting with the Radio Editor (George Berridge) and sorted out getting the software and licensing.

Wednesday

Change of script after a breaking news story from Andy. Had to re print the script three times. Skeleton script done on Tuesday, then wrote on Wednesday morning with the news stories. Andy had breaking news so I briefed the team that there would be a script change and an in the studio interview with Andy. The team coped very well with this, as I know last semester when late script changes happened during the London demo's there was a lot of confusion and panic.

A lot of technical problems occurred. Some could have been avoided, such as the problem with the green screen lighting. This could have been set up before, but when I entered the gallery just before the bulletin the Greenscreen wasn't working correctly and I wasn't happy with the quality. This therefore made us miss our 3:00 deadline. Justina the Director rescheduled for 15 minutes later and made sure problems were solved as much as they could be.

Another problem which could have been avoided was the fact that there was no headline music, which should have been sorted on Tuesday and not moments before the bulletin aired.

Unavoidable problems included the headline snot recording and the bulletin not uploading.

I then worked on individual feedback with Chris and discussed the news stories and layout.

Thursday

Me, Justina, Domonique and Cara sorted out the website. Domonique and Justina uploaded the bulletin, Cara subbed articles and I worked on the look of the website (such as pictures) and made sure there wasn’t any legal problems. We made our 1pm deadline with the front page layout looking good –although pictures where weak.
My biggest weakness this week was being too involved in the gallery; but it’s my first week like everyone else and I have to learn to!

Here’s to a better bulletin next week!

WINOL feedback -Bulletin 1

February 09, 2011

Firstly, I would like to say a big thank you and well done to everyone who worked on Winol this week. For our first bulletin I think it went really well -and we can only improve from here on!

Individual Feedback:

Karen Purnell, Managing Editor:

An amazing job has been done on advertising this week -Reader Response is already at an all time high! Next week could you manage the website ticker and note any technical problems which need the loan counters attention.

Cara Laithwaite, Presenter/Bulletin Editor/Cheif Sub

The scripting this week couldn't be better -complete control over the script was kept (with help with Gareth). Your presenting was natural and relaxed, and you're hand are under control! Subbing has been allocated well.

Domonique Jenkins, Production Editor

A big well done to the production team is needed! For a first week technical problems were dealt with well, and forward organisation cannot be faulted. Now we've had our first week i think you now need to know what is expected, so next week we should be on the ball! You managed your team with great control and kept calm throughout the whole day -the more bulletins we do, the better we'll get!

Justina Chlad, Director

You rescheduled the 'bulletin live time' appropriately and queued everything on time. Remember you're in charge of the gallery, so let everyone know that! (I apologise for getting involved, next week I'll take a back seat) You were really helpful at editing, and the production team rely on you for this.

Drew Bridger, Production

You have a great attitude and thirst for knowledge! You were really helpful throughout the whole day, which is what we need. Just remember to set up sound and check lighting as soon as you set up the gallery in the morning (get the production team to quickly pose as presenters) and listen to Dominique's instructions -I know everyone kept trying to grab you away but from next week you will be solely based in the gallery. Thanks for you optimism throughout the day!

Claire Lomas, Production

For your first time on vision mixing you did a brilliant job! I was told you had hardly any training, so I'm really impressed with how well you coped -Especially when the green screen went down. You took control of opening up the studio whilst Dominique was in a meeting, so great annotative.

Katie Rowles, Production

You and Claire designed the football graphics which were good for a first attempt. With little training on the auto-que you did excellently, especially as it kept crashing. Well done on quickly typing up the auto-que as well, you were under serious pressure!

William Cooper, Sports Editor

You helped out with a lot of editing what wasn't you're own today, so I want to thank you for that. Sports wise you've been very organised, and the packages your team produced were good. Sports week is of a high standard already, but you need to check your teams scripting before they record their voice overs and then check the quality of these. You sorted out a new sports news story for the bulletin at short notice with Gareth as well, so well done with coping with the spontaneity of that task. Match reports are also on time, whoo!

Mikey Smith, Chief Sports Reporter

Your scripting is really coming along and is probably the best on the team. You need to be more aware of your voice over quality (this is a comment which has been said before so please be aware of this next week). Well done for recording the match on Saturday on your own, you did a really good job -keep it up!

Aimee Pickering -Sports reporter

Your package for sports week is amazing, good scripting (although you need more facts) and top-notch visuals!!! -You're voice on your package was perfect. When presenting try to look more natural.

Jake Gable -Sports Reporter

Good forward planning. You need to be in on Wednesdays to help the whole team please.

Gareth Messenger -Sports Reporter/Presenter

As said in Will's feed back, well done with dealing with the sports news story. Your package was well shot and interview was comical!! Get Mikey or Will to help you with scripting please. Your work on the script for the bulletin was really appreciated; this script was excellent (probably because you've been news trained) so it shouldn't be hard to get up to scratch on sport. You was a really help throughout the day, thanks!

Michael Connolly -Sports Reporter

Your package amazing!! You're doing really well on sport, great editing and content. Only downside is that your interview is very dark. Voice over is good quality.

News Editor -Julie Cordier

You've done a brilliant job this week! You kept calm and organised throughout the week (even through my on-going demands) and managed your team well -even with new reporters. No packages had any problems with them either, and you made sure balance was kept. I can't really criticise anything else, so short and sweet, well done!

Andrew Giddings -Chief Reporter

Brilliant forward planning for next week with your news stories. You did really well on your live interview, I cannot fault you!

Dave Champion -News Reporter

With what I asked you to do today, you did really well. The interview isn't amazing, but it's amazing that you made that within 5 minuets. You coped with all my 'demands' today within a really short time frame without panicking, well done. Good forward planning for next week as well!

Hana Keegan -News Reporter

Really good scripting in package and voice over was clear and concise. Liked the voice over at the beginning of the interview. Interview background needs to be better next time. Good support through the day for the team, thanks!

Kieran Brannigan -News Reporter

Piece to Camera was much better than before, thanks for taking my advice the night before -I know it's stressful (be aware of head room though). Good opening sequence, loved the graphic as well! Make sure you interview with a better background next time please. Really good attitude throughout the week.

Sam Homewood -News Reporter

Unfortunately your package was spiked from the bulletin because it was saved in the wrong file format, which was a shame as I really wanted it in there! It was a good package overall, although control your hands when doing your piece to camera (look at Stu's packages).

Natasha Spencer, Sam Harper and Shira Pinczuk -News Reporters

Unfortunately I can't give individual feedback in as much detail as I would like as you all worked closely together on your package; however next week you will work alone, so I should be able to then. Your package had very strong pictures and you had done a lot of research into the story. Natasha have more faith in yourself, you did great and your pice to camera was good for your first try, but try to be a but more natural (It's hard I know but this will come with practise). Scripting was also strong.

Colin Boag -Features Editor

You were happy to give what's on a go when we all thought it was doomed, so well done with that! I'm really excited about your plans for features and your ambition and organisation is great. Don't be too scared of video, you'll understand it soon enough within our work environment. The written features so far have been great! keep up the good work (
and email-ing!).

Rebecca Grey -Production

You really helped out the production team today and it was really appreciated; you're easy to work with and have a great knowledge of production even though you haven't been trained. Get planning with next weeks what's on with Jack -Thats make it a good one!

Ali -First year

You did really well on the VT machine with everyone shouting at you and are always a reliable runner, thanks for coming in!

Josh -First year

It's really beneficial for yourself and the team that you're trained on camera's -i know i can rely on you for this and your feedback about me and my role throughout the day is really appreciated.

George and Uldduz -First years

Great work on the radio yesterday guys. Keep up the good work, I have told Chris what you are doing and he's really impressed. A lot of you're work is behind the scenes for the next few weeks, but it's not going un-noticed!

A note to everyone:
Please try to sit at your teams desks were possible as it makes it easier to talk to the teams and editors can manage you better. Do not sit in the MMC as the computers freeze a lot (as seen today) and technical problems occur.

-It might be nice for someone to get a little thank you card for Dave (the technician) as he help with A LOT of technical problems today; thats keep him happy with Winol!

Also sorry for using 'good', 'brilliant', 'amazing' and 'well done' so much -I run out of adjectives and it's a Wednesday night so my brains fried!

Thanks for all your hard work team; thats do it all again next week, and better! :)

Winol -New semester news!

January 16, 2011

The Winol team with Laura Barton

We're back to University in a few weeks so I thought I'd start using my blog as a message board for Winol as I can't access the course one.

Just some quick notes to keep the whole team involved with what's happening at the moment:

News:

We're hoping to get some LondonMet students involved with Winol and use them as London correspondents; that way we can get news quicker and easier from London and not have to worry about train fares and loosing reporters in Winchester. I am currently in talks about this so will keep the new team updates -Julie I need to talk to you about this in more detail.

Features:

I am current working for iN magazine, so am having some brilliant features training at the moment. I'm filled with inspiration and think with Andy as features editor we can get some really good stuff this semester, I have lots of new idea's what I'll discuss in the features meetings.

I was also thinking the features team could create fashion show; I have feelance make up artists which will come to Winchester and work for free on the models and hopefully get some sample clothing from my work placement. -Maybe we can create an event in the vault for this? Do a catwalk and invite guests? -Just an idea, which may be pretty mad, but i think we can pull it off? I know the girls are interested and me and Cara are dying to show Chris, Brian and you boys that FASHION IS JOURNALISM!!

Sports:

Sports runs likes clockwork, but as the team has more reporters this semester I think we can start producing a lot more next semester. The football side of sports is amazing and can't be knocked; however we need to start covering a lot more sports. -some of the weird and wonderful ones too!! Possibly start doing some sports features as well?

If anyone has any ideas then please comment on this post! Me and the editors will all be meeting when I'm back so I can get everything organised and make a new outline for Winol (deadlines, meeting times etc), so get you ideas in guys so we can discus them!

Hope you're all having a good holiday :)

WINOL Aims for this Year

September 29, 2010

I have wrote up brief notes from the lecture outlining the guidelines, aims and targets we have been set for WINOL this year. -As Machiavelli said, if you're going to stab someone, you may as well make sure you kill them! :)

Banned Phrases:
'I couldn't find a story/feature' -for any reason.
'I want to do a story about...' -do not just give a vague outline of an issue, talk about the individual story/person with specific details (when proposing stories, come with at least two ideas).
Do not use 'too little too late' and 'remains to be seen'.
When interviewing or doing an OB do not use 'I am at' or 'I spoke to' -We can see where you are and the person you're interviewing!
Targets:
More womens sports! We need to cultivate sports news on WINOL as it attracts a lot of viewers.
Aim to have an outside broadcast (OB) every week (remember to top and tail).
When there's a big event we need to co-ordinate departments -Advertise each other!
Press officers will not call you back or be helpful, so be persistent and keep badgering them! If they wont help you, ring someone else. Remember if it is a negative story people will be less willing to give an interview. In this case it may be a good idea to ring unions, charities etc to get comments, and then to ring back with statements and ask for a response.
When calling people do not state that you're a student -be proud and say you're a journalist from WINOL!
Build up your contacts book for easy interviews.
News agenda market penetration: we need to get 501 viewers to beat The Sun (On campus), 100 to beat the Hampshire Chronicle, 50 to beat The Guardian and 10 to beat the FT.
Sport:
Less reliance on highlights, use them as bankers. Aim to feature one team on campus every week.
We now have the Tri Caster, so can broadcast live from anywhere.

Production Team:
The production team should focus more on the look of the show, rather than content. For example we need a better opening scene, and look into what else could be done with the green screen.
CMS (Content management system) and flash training will be given in the next week so the website can be improved. At the moment the content is easily produced but simply formatted.
Features:
A lot more photography is needed -Think visually when writing. Do not come to your editor with just text, pictures and videos are as important.
Features need to be more light-hearted and fun, with more human interest.
News:
Write up your story as a text article with pictures so we can submit it on the website. This way we can have text to put up with video, search engines will find it easier and if your story isn't chosen for the bulletin, it still gets published (weekly)!

Editors should build up a stock of spiked stories. This way if something adventurous falls through you will have a back up. This way reporters wont blackmail you as they know you have free space. Reporters wont be marked down for being spiked, however if it does happen often it may show there's a problem.
Humanize the story to generate public interest.
Videos:
More Nat sod (natural sound) is needed at the start of videos.
It is not necessary to introduce interviewees by their name as there is a caption.
Shoot in sequences, one angle is boring!
Remember we shoot in thirds, don't just place someone in the middle.
Guilty building and sign shots are banned.
When doing a vox pop only feature 3 people. They should be used as a last resort as they're not a replacement for an interview. Remember to interview people who are directly effected by the issue.

An example of what not to do would be Northampton's Simon and Emily.
